Stained Glass Beginners' Course: learn the basics!

I teach an introduction to leaded stained glass course in partnership with Kent Adult Education in Broadstairs and Margate, Kent.

Our course gives you practice in the essential techniques and plenty of hands-on experience with tools and glass.

I’m proud to create a fun and relaxed time for you to enjoy discovering new skills. What people have said about my classes:

“Rob is a natural and patient teacher and within the day I learnt the main techniques of stained glass and came away with a new skill and a stunning piece that I am very proud of.

Rob’s personable character and obvious love of glass craft made the day very enjoyable.”

With between 3 and 6 students you can be sure of plenty of attention and guidance. The class is suitable for anyone over 16.

We start by looking at the basic skills and tools:
  • Scoring and breaking glass: using oil-cutter, grozing pliers, breaking pliers.
  • Handling lead cames: using a lead knife, fid, hammers, horse shoe nails, lead vice.
  • Soldering: using a high-power soldering iron and fluxes.
  • Puttying and ‘dressing down’ the lead.
  • Cleaning the lead panel: picks, brushes.

Choose between 3 different projects to work on and a selection of coloured glass to work with. You take home everything you make!

The course cost includes:
  • All materials, choice of starter designs and glass
  • Use of tools and protective gear
